Knowing Your Chances in Poker

Poker is an exciting, albeit dangerous, combination of skill and luck. Dangerous in the sense that bad luck can ruin the chances of even the strongest poker hand. But danger is what makes poker so exciting, and not a few are willing to risk their pride and money for the sheer thrill of winning.

Many strategies and tactics have been formulated over the years on the best way to win a poker game. Poker strategies that have worked for some people may not work for others, so there's no perfect strategy that can make you win 100% of the time.

However, poker experts and pros are one in agreement on the importance of a poker strategy. Although strategy cannot completely guarantee a win, it can help you make the right decisions, on whether to fold, check, bet or raise.

The proper knowledge of poker odds is also a vital aspect of successful poker strategy. If you know the odds of improving a hand, it will be easier for you to make the correct decision. You might be more inclined to fold a hand that has poor chances of improving and to bet or raise if it has a realistic chance of becoming the best hand.

Aside from knowing the odds, you must also have a decent knowledge of hand strengths. You must know how to analyze the odds of winning with your hand. For instance, a two-pair can give you the confidence to bet, but you must realize that your opponents might be hiding a flush or full house somewhere.

What makes poker so challenging is the fact that you need not rely on hard skills alone. Psychological tactics have become more and more valuable as players gain more skill and experience in playing. These tactics include bluffing, reading poker tells, analyzing opponents' hands and disguising bodily language and signals.

The ability to read your opponents' gestures and expressions (also known as poker tells) can give you a significant edge at the poker tables. In the same manner, you can deny your opponents this advantage if you know how to hide your emotions and display what is known as a "poker face."

Bluffing can also catch your opponents off-guard and help you steal the pot, but don't overdo it. Bluff only when it is absolutely necessary. Experienced players can see through bluffs and you don't want to throw away this advantage.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should vary your playing patterns to confuse your opponents who are trying to analyze your play. This might be easier said than done but you can do it once you become familiar with different playing styles.

Don't rely on luck alone to win in poker. Make use of an excellent poker strategy, know the odds of winning, gain a psychological edge over your opponents and make the bet where it counts the most. After all, you can't win anything if you don't risk something.
